Took a brief moment to scratch the surface of XR tech with Lisa Gralnek last week. She's got a whole series of brief discussions with a ton of interesting minds, so check out her podcast 'The Future of XYZ'

Thoughts on #AI#art
Whether you think it's art or not, midjourney and other AI generated art applications are here to stay.
As someone who's been working in digital art and design since the early 90s, I want to share some of my thoughts.
1/?
In coming years, I think we'll hear a lot more about "AI fluency"
It may be called something else, but the same way ppl have varying fluency with spoken language X or programming language Y, some ppl will learn to prompt waaay better than others.
And they'll be rewarded for it.
the "design of everyday things" truisms do not hold for ar/vr. even don norman and scott klemmer know this. so always surprised when designers try to pigeonhole ar/vr/3d design into that framework.
What do you call a designer of spatial experience, untethered to flat or 2 dimensional interactions in VR?
It is akin to physical architecture in a pure sense, designing the flow and experience of spaces to move through, feel time stretch, and sound envelop you.
A brand like Teenage Engineering is able to keep thinking outside the box and convention of mainstream Silicon Valley *Because* they avoid focusing on scale and mass appeal.
Biggest mystery of the past decade is Teenage Engineering 1) *not* being Acqui-hired by the FAANGs 2) not being able to scale as a challenger brand in mainstream lifestyle tech.
Guessing they could have, and chose not to (integrity choice?). A missed opportunity no less.
11 ways ChatGPT saves me hours of work every day, and why you'll never outcompete those who use AI effectively.

In 2022 I had the pleasure of interviewing 11 fantastic people with diverse backgrounds on the Robust & Responsible AI live streams!
Thank you all for being incredible guests and sharing your ML & Data experiences! I'll post a link all the episodes below 👇
On the matter of other artist's work...
My new certified organic, free-range, grass-fed artisanal Jay-diffusion-31.8 image generation model may need to have its datasets purged of all mention of the artist 'Van Gough'. 😏😉🌌
You could say that for 'Art' as a medium for the expression of meaning, emotion, and experience...
It's never been so widely studied and examined by such a broad spectrum of humanity as now.
The 'production' of imagery now cheapened, everyone witnesses and decides their meaning
Delving deeper into #AIart as a medium for artistic expression over the past 6 months, I've learned more than in any art history classroom during school.
A refresher on the language of composition and art's meaning led me to discover historic artists and creators I'd never known.
Is AI art really art?
That's one of the biggest and most interesting questions of the 21st century.
And the answer might have something to do with this 500 year old drawing from the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci...
You descend down some stairs into a quiet hallway & turn left. Opening the door into the shop, a dulcimer is strummed by the action of the door's swing. It creates a wonderful effect, one which subconsciously frames your entire experience every time you step into that place. 3/3
An experiential example of Additive layers from flesh reality: There is a music shop in Seattle called 'Dusty Strings'. My favorite thing about this place is that you have to go through a door from the street which muffles the sounds of the city behind you when it closes. 2/3
I've been quietly working on a new XR project lately, developing additive music and interaction mechanics for the soundscape.
I'm finding it increasingly helpful to think entirely outside 3D game design paradigms, sometimes looking for inspiration from fleshy analog reality. 1/3
Funny how the best description of virtual architecture I ever read comes from the father of brutalism:
"Architectural space is similar to the movement of water. It has a velocity, there are cross currents of movement, it surges forward or upward, it can trickle to a standstill,

Understand AI community's frustration with first impressions of #stablediffusion2, I was too. But after experimented new prompt engineering with various styles by SD2+Diffusers runned in DFserver, I discovered advantages and uniqueness of SD2
Yes, you need to work for it with #StableDiffusion2 but you can get an incredible level of detail.
This is a raw output at 768x768. No upscaling or facial restoration.
I can imagine this getting insanely good with a bit of tweaking/finetuning. #AIart
Raw #StableDiffusion2 output from text prompt in (un)surprisingly few steps by @masslevel
Really do recommend folk take some time to explore the model, even more versatile than before with some exciting things in the pipeline.. twitter.com/masslevel/stat…
An *amazing* piece that humorously explains why content moderation on social networks is difficult, painful, expensive, & ultimately unpopular but necessary.
A lesson for new owners of social networks who think they can do away with content moderation.
Long term VR usage does really weird stuff to your brain that non-VR users are going to be really skeptical of for a long time.
If you get into it, prepare to have people not believe you when you try describing it
The control illusion of firm earth and stone vanishes; all that's left is to face the emerging furies rather than fight and exact conscious 'control' over what emerges from the darkness.
Perhaps the call of the sea is one of visceral embodiment, drifting upon our inner ocean.🌌
Will yourself to release. Go toes first with caution or let yourself drop all at once, descending fully into that void space. The force of it merges with you, ripples through your body; irresistible energy compels you to relax and unfold within its reverberations.
Why does the sea profoundly call to some of us?

You fix the horizon, an undulating surface beneath which you cannot see. No focus or gaze can pierce its depth.
There is one way to illuminate that roiling abyss below the consciousness without flinching back in cold, wet, fear🌊
I've been digging into the sound design behind Hellblade, which is an amazing example of a deeply immersive and integral soundscape in a game depicting a character experiencing psychosis.
I've been trouncing around Brazil for the past couple months. A local cafe in Paraty made a delightful playlist of music. If you want brazilian coffee vibes, here's your ticket.
A million things → what's happening in AI, summarised.
Here's a bunch of cool shit that's going on.

No more emails. If you want something from me you must approach me slowly and calmly with a piece of apple or carrot in your palm with your fingers flat and extended so I do not bite them
Shipping my Quest 2 to myself in Brazil so I can start working on a new VR project...😬😅
I've not heard great things about customs charges
for electronics here, even for things you already own.
Fingers crossed there are no serious complications en route. 🤞🤞🤞
