We’ll always be the country that elected, and likely failed to hold accountable, Trump. He’s right. Nobody will believe fully in the American institution anymore.

Many of us haven't believed in the American institution in several decades. Trump's presidency has only proven our suspicions, and reaffirmed our belief that our government is likely corrupt beyond salvaging.

True, but I'm going to go with the glass half full. We would be toast if Trump was smart and not as driven by emotion as a petulant 12 year old boy. He may end up being like a flu that leaves you weaker in some ways, but stronger against similar flus.

Perhaps some countries emerge stronger if they survive authoritarianism (especially fascism) and integrate the experience into the national psyche. Spain comes to mind.
