  1. I would like to commend, not only this column, but its final paragraph, in particular. It makes an important point about Trump. I myself have made it, and I used to make it about Bill Clinton, too. "He has enjoyed immunity through profusion."

  4. Many of my friends (and others) say that we cannot afford decency in these challenging political times. It's a luxury. Actually, it is more like a necessity, in all times.

  5. "Mitt Romney, a Man Alone." I hope he knows, however, that he has his appreciators.

  6. A couple of men were honored at this dinner, and it was noted that they were both sons of Linz. (This was in Austria.) I leaned over to her and whispered, "You know who else was a son of Linz, don't you?" She threw back her head and laughed. A great private moment. Loved her.

  7. Sat next to her at dinner one night. Someone tried to start something between us, re opera productions. (She was a famous Modernist.) She said, "The truth is, there are good traditional productions and bad ones; good modern productions and bad ones." Could have kissed her.

  9. So smart, in every paragraph. Essential reading by Bret Stephens.

  11. Marie Yovanovitch has just retired from the State Department. I hope a future administration — Republican or Democratic — will bring her back in some capacity. She is a smart, effective patriot, who knows the value of freedom and democracy over dictatorships of all types.

  12. I would say that a country that wants either Trump or Bernie is a country on the ropes. A country that is saying sayonara to all we have held dear. But maybe that is just the gloom of the moment (meaning, mine) ...

  13. If the choice comes down to Trump or Bernie -- !!! -- I guess Trump would win. But I just don't know. I doubt anybody does, no matter what he says. In a democracy such as ours, the People decide. And if the two major nominees are Trump and Bernie -- wow. What a comment on us.

  14. President of Bennington, Antioch, or Reed, sure. President of the United States? That, I could never have imagined.

  15. Only a few years ago, I would not have said that Americans would elect as president an elderly socialist with a history of praising the Soviets, Fidel Castro, and the Sandinistas. But I will confess: Not sure I know my country all that well anymore, if I ever did.

  16. If the voters give Trump a second term, I would not bet against another impeachment and another trial (on different matters, of course). Would you?

In my latest "Music for a While," I talk about Mariss Jansons, the late, great conductor. I also play some of his recordings. It's a great show, I must say -- because of him, of course.

Today, Kevin Williamson and I had an hour's talk, about writing, conservatism, and other issues of some importance to us. You may like. Give it a whirl.
