Biden said he’d be a “bridge” — a clever and effective concept. But if he tries to extend the bridge too far …

Nationalism has its upsides (a sense of sovereignty; a sense of obligation to one’s fellow, particularly to one’s neighbor or countryman). But the downsides — what curses.

"The number of people who refused to provide an ethnic identification grew substantially," one expert said of the 2021 Russian census. "This is a result of growing xenophobia." trts.io/xAn3w

Thank you to the men and women of the United States military who were responsible for completing the mission to shoot down the Chinese surveillance balloon. The Biden Administration did the right thing in bringing it down.

So commonsensical, it is almost un-modern.

One thing I've been thinking a lot about since the murder of Tyre Nichols (and since multiple other terrible incidents)--what does it mean to "support" an institution, to be "pro-police" or "pro-military"? I consider myself both pro-police and pro-military, but.../1

When nat-pops say “free-market fundamentalism” — one of their favorite insults — what they mean is “economic sense, as anyone over about 16 ought to grasp.”

National Conservatives cheered Viktor Orban's price controls as a pro-family "win," but - as @MrRBourne documents here - the result was just what Milton Friedman and other "Free Market Fundamentalists" would predict: Misery. reason.com/2023/02/02/nat

People who live in liberal democracies and want to campaign against liberal democracy, do so with the tools and rights of liberal democracy itself. I say to all Putinists, scribbling: Vladimir Kara-Murza and other political prisoners would like the same rights that you enjoy.

Reading the first paragraph would be enough -- enough to give one a sense of what has gone on in Congo. There are many hellish places in the world: Ukraine, Syria, North Korea. This is one of the worst.

Question: Have people become numb to the perpetual assault on civilians in Ukraine? I mean, people other than Ukrainians? My sense is, this has happened, and that it was inevitable -- as inevitable as it is lamentable.

Great. I wish to add something--something of a historical nature, if you will. Deirdre's father, Robert McCloskey, was a Harvard political scientist. Two friends of mine--eminent intellectuals--count him as one of the most important teachers they ever had. Wish I had known him!

Grand news for @CatoInstitute: eminent economist and historian Deirdre McCloskey has joined us on a full-time basis as the Distinguished Scholar, Isaiah Berlin Chair in Liberal Thought, Cato president and CEO Peter Goettler announced today. Hurrah!

Back in USSR: in Volgograd, Russians unveiled the monument to Stalin. Reportedly some 1,400 people came. I won't be surprised if among them were the descendants of those repressed by Stalin because memory became really short in today's #Russia.

I understand why Mitch Daniels decided not to run for Senate. But his decision demonstrated exactly why he should have done it, and gave a victory to forces that are making our politics worse. My lament in @NRO: nationalreview.com/corner/mitch-d

I've noticed something: Americans who oppose our Ukraine aid -- for their various reasons -- tend to say, "Stop giving money to Zelensky." They don't say "Ukraine" or "Ukrainians." They say "Zelensky." Kind of interesting. A bogeyman?
