here at Central HS for the JCPS board meeting, looking forward to hearing from commenters who have never gone west of the Watterson explain why CRT is racist

interesting: none of the earlier hecklers are shouting that the anti-CRT speakers are off-topic or out of orderhttps://twitter.com/jaymills/status/1420152227801542662 …

the current speaker is decrying JCPS’s insistence on “equalized outcomes” which is not a thing that’s happening in JCPS

Now we are hearing from Karen, a retired nurse whose kids and grandkid attended JCPS. She is criticizing the whole language approach to teaching reading, and the weaknesses of online instruction. She says “I wonder if you could do better … Sweden was open the whole time!”pic.twitter.com/hnlQsTwef6

now a doctor and data scientist is saying that because the death rate for kids from Covid is so low, they should not wear masks. he says we nearly have herd immunity. he criticizes the Duke study Pollio cited.

next guy: “A history lesson for all you! It all started with Karl Marx!” and then cites Gramsci:Frankfurt School, citing the Jewish heritage of one critical theorist. “They all fled Germany and Hitler!” and then says letting them in the US was let the foxes in the hen house! Okay

he was both loudly applauded and booed. Chairwoman Porter told one very loud heckler to leave; he did, and a bunch of guards/cops followed him out.

a registered nurse is now on the mic decrying “medical tyranny,” “teacher union mandates,” and “endless fearmongering.” She says HER preferred medical experts are against masks.

yet another speaker says “Covid is just not dangerous for children” and that the Delta variant is “less dangerous than the original strain”pic.twitter.com/4yXp3frqBm

the women behind me who were yelling and booing loudly are now saying “amen” when the speakers make anti-mask mandate pointspic.twitter.com/kH83RpDbpC
Show this thread -
next is Terrance Sullivan, the executive director of the Ky Commission on Human Rights. he is in favor of universal masking, specifically to address the health outcomes of our city’s poorest students
Show this thread -
I just had to tell the people behind me to shut up and be respectful while Terrance was speaking
Show this thread -
next is another speaker who is criticizing the psychological impacts of daily mask use on students, but I’m barely listening because I’m still mad at the disrespect
Show this thread -
next woman says “I’m a Kentuckian and an American!!” and then says other districts are not mandating masks. “Let US parent our children!!” She also says “God looks at our hearts!” and then asks the board to let their pride go. Cites the Bible repeatedly and throws in an Amen.
Show this thread -
same woman wonders aloud if mandating mask use is a way for the board to make more money??? Oh it was one of the women sitting behind me, of course
Show this thread -
yet another speaker cites a study about ineffective mask mandates, but she’s comparing statewide mask mandates with school mask mandates
Show this thread -
I’m still stuck on this. How is the JCPS school board making money from mandating masks???? I can’t —https://twitter.com/jaymills/status/1420164846117609472 …

now a U of L professor with a child in JCPS is speaking. She thanks the board and teachers for their hard work, and thanks Pollio for recommending a mask mandate. she says this is the best and most equitable way to ensure safety for students. amazingly, no one boos her.

hahaha I spoke too soon, one person shouted “Boo!” when she mentioned the CDC

Final speaker (I think?) cites Covid death rates and Delta transmission rates in support of a mask mandate. Part of audience is audibly skeptical, jeering and hissing.
Show this thread -
whoops there is one more speaker, Tyra Walker, a JCPS teacher who is an unstoppable force of nature and the co-chair of the Ky Alliance. She reads a statement in support of teaching equality, truth and compassion and decrying misinformed critiques of “CRT” and equity.
Show this thread -
“it’s time for Black children to see images of themselves in history books! … We are not wanting to teach hate, we are here to teach love!” Huge round of applause, no boos that I could hear.

JCPS/JCTA legend Kumar Rashad is trying hard to educate CRT skeptics in the audience. Kumar asks one guy who’s mad about CRT: “Who’s Kimberly Crenshaw?” Of course that dude didn’t know anything about Crenshaw or CRT for real.
Show this thread -
at one point Rashad mentions January 6 as an example of white rage and this other dude (pictured below) says “Well that was uh misreported.” Same dude cites George Soros as an example of someone trying to divide America.pic.twitter.com/BuBoLnvAQf

Board member Corrie Shull is having a very civil disagreement with the rude woman who was sitting behind me. Her: “It’s illegal!” Him: “No, it’s not.” Her: “Yes it is!” Him: “If it’s illegal, sue the school board!” Her: *changes topic*

OH then she just told me to stop videotaping her. I said “First of all, I didn’t shoot any video. Second, you’re in a public place at a public meeting. I can videotape you or photograph you if I want, without your permission.” Her: “Well okay then!”

I have to leave the meeting because I feel a migraine coming on, no joke. Please follow
