During Obama's 2009 SOTU, wingnut Joe Wilson shouted, in the middle of it, "liar!" It brought neither him or his party any negative consequences at all. I'd like you to imagine what would happen if AOC attended the SOTU tonight and did the same thing.

My 11 year just nearly had a heart attack when he saw the exit polls in Iowa saying health care was the number one issue. “Not climate change?” he moans. “It’s like the the house is on fire and all people care about is doing renovations.”

Remember this: one of the two political parties in the U.S. is explicitly opposed to human rights. They've thrown in their lot and that's where it is.

I see that the location of a large American city has become the subject of partisan controversy.

In a first for the secular movement, humanist witness Rafida Bonya Ahmed, through our Policy Manager Rachel Deitch, spoke about the dangers of blasphemy laws around the world and how the U.S. can help end it. Tap the preview below to read about this!

Props to all the organizers and vols today; but thinking of the staffer on every campaign who’s responsible for returning 50 15-passenger vans to the rental place tomorrow, who inevitably will have to chase down someone who got sent to the next state but still has keys for one

LOL Senate Republicans passing a “Sense of the Senate Resolution” that the Chiefs belong to Kansas too and then pundits being all “but the city does straddle two states.” And then the NYT editorials being all “Democrats Lack Civility in Kansas Misunderstanding.”

We're going to get 20 articles in the Times, Washington Post, NPR etc about visiting mid-western diners, where people don't care if the president doesn't know the difference between Kansas & Missouri, only elitist snobs care about geographical details, etc.

Will someone please reassure American men that they are plenty tough? Everyone is very impressed with how tough they are. We can stop this nonsense.

that modern american politics is both murderously violent in its outcomes and devoted to politeness in its affect rightfully drives any thinking person a bit mad

Authoritarians and authoritarian movements depend on their blatant crimes and power grabs demoralizing populations and driving them away from politics as they lose faith. It cedes control and authority and just leads to more authoritarianism.

In an election year, Republican presidents are immune from impeachment and Democratic presidents lose their ability to appoint Supreme Court justices.

It's amazing how much structural change the Democratic Party is capable of when rich people are in trouble.

I still think about the head of the WA GOP, who left the party after Trump won and, in his own words, expected a parade of good-faith Republicans to follow him. But he turned around and...there was no one. He was blindsided by the nature of the party *he helped run*.

In any other country this would signify a terrorist operation, coup attempt, or other subversives’ assault on the halls of power. Here the thugs are part of the power structure: gun-profit happy politicians support them and hide behind their intimidation tactics.

On one hand, GAH. On the other hand, it's kind of true. Trump is not ideologically extreme; he's not ideologically anything. He's a lurching, disregulated assemblage of instincts & appetites.

“like” and “um” are verbal cues that “this briefest of pauses is not the end of my thought” so they actually increase in the presence of a person you think will cut you off guess which group does the most cutting off and so hears them the most !!

one of the best parts of the impeachment process is watching people be like "Republicans think you can win a trial by lying and blocking relevant evidence!" like yes you absolutely can do that, literally every trial is like this, there is no justice and there is no god
