To what extent must a writer acknowledge the audience whom their writing most easily attracts? I'm not sure of the answer, but I do know that Jesse Singal has to be aware that he's writing sweet words for a lot of people who would see every trans person wiped off the planet.

Let's check in with "reasonably concerned" Jesse fans when somebody challenges him.

Astonishing that some media sites didn’t have the management skills to avoid layoffs in this record breaking economic period

The resolution "denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States of America" It is worth noting that Republicans want to cut Medicare and Social Security, and will use this resolution as a political tool to that end.

what makes the cut's new etiquette guide so good is reading and nodding along like yep yep that's normal yep of course yep and suddenly: bam, you're told you have to text your friends three hours after you hang out to confirm that you still like them. a content slot machine

Word is circulating about an assault outside Ray's Candy Store on Avenue A that left Ray Alvarez, the shop's 90-year-old proprietor, with a black eye and a gash on his temple. Here's what we know so far: bit.ly/3HOVtMW

It’s been over a week since 20+ members of the Vox Media Union were laid off, and we still haven’t heard from @bankoff. We’ve collected questions from our members on the impact of these layoffs, and we want answers.

If you’re seeing this story for the first time, please know that the Adams admin isn’t only attacking asylum seekers, they’re also lying about “outside agitators” and other narratives to avoid the truth that migrants self-organized and refused to be mistreated. Thread below.

A huge story is unfolding in New York where asylum seekers are refusing horrible conditions. And there's a tired effort by Eric Adams to lie about "outsider agitators" and other nonsense, so it's huge that @democracynow is telling the truth. Please share around!

It's not just here: executives aren't just laying people off for no good reason, they are refusing to answer for it to the employees that remain.

Rita McMahon, the director of the Wild Bird Fund, did not know why the bird was stained pink but said her best guess – which was shared by pigeon advocates with whom she’d consulted – is that it was used in a gender reveal party. gothamist.com/news/mysteriou

I am proud to have bargained a contract where our laid off colleagues got some good severance. But no one is hiring rn, and lots of those people have health and family concerns, so please consider donating to make their runway even longer

I frankly do not expect meaningful answers to these questions, because I do not think these layoffs happened for any defendable reason. But I do want the company to know that if they were relying on this time as a cooling off period for their workforce, it didn't work.

Layoffs happened January 18. We're having a company all-hands TOMORROW, and despite messaging Jim directly in Slack have not received even an acknowledgment that he has seen our questions and concerns.

"The law might help us sometimes, but it’s not designed to, and we shouldn’t count on it." -
"So I’m personally not super optimistic about the future of the law there. But it’s our job, as organizers, to organize anyway. The law, from my perspective, was never meant to be on our side. U.S. labor law has always been terrible, and it really comes from a directive from the rank-and-file workers themselves to win the things that they need through their own activity. The law might help us sometimes, but it’s not designed to, and we shouldn’t count on it."

"We either do our job and waste a bunch of food, and then get put in a situation where we can be held legally accountable for that, or we don’t do our job and all of a sudden we’re accountable to the company for not doing our job.”
