I need some help. Question: what would be the appropriate PPE for paramedics that are providing standby, safety support and response to a wildfire? Essentially warm zone work. Ideas, examples and opinions are all welcome. Please share.

NSDNR requires people in the hot zone to wear steel toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses, leather work gloves and fire resistive type clothing. In the warm zone your hard hats, safety glasses, steel toed boots should be more then enough.

Thx bill. What ,if any, issues with respiratory protection?

This article tweaked my interest into the question.https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/fort-mcmurray-wildfire-rcmp-safety-masks-1.4621705 …

This article brings up a lot of good points that even a responder in the warm zone should consider like falling embers where a nomex overall would protect and prolonged exposure and a better seal with the 3M@half face respirator, along with the standard PPE.

And it would stand to reason that a mask with exchangeable filters and a tight seal with particle filters would be sufficient for a “clean” burning woods fire, but most certainly not a housing or garbage contents fire with carcinogens.

Hmm .... clean smoke? Is that the same as saying light cigarettes are better than regular cigarettes?

Haha no. By “clean” I mean strictly wood burning as opposed to the contents of a house fire with plastics and chemicals. I assume most do not wear a mask sitting around a camp fire?

Point taken. Does a wildfire produce the equivalent PPM particulate, vapors and gases that a campfire does?

That’s an excellent question and I do not have the answer to that. But if you watch local fire services fight a wildfire, rarely do they wear a mask. I feel like the fort mac fire was much different than a standard wildfire due to involving so many structures as well.
