Agreed. This definitely keeps me up at night. So much of whatโ€™s made this country special stems from the fact that itโ€™s the place that the most enterprising minds around the world desire to go to. If America loses that, it loses a heck of a lot.

It is interesting to consider the likely non-linear upsides of high concentrations of smart / driven people balanced against the at least partially zero-sum game of depriving other parts of the world of them. Optimistic-me thinks net positive for all, but others could differ.

Iโ€™m all for global talent movement and economic maximization, but I am often tagged as lacking in empathy for it. If talent is wasted in parts of the world, what is their path forward? Earn abroad, then return home to improve it? Charity? I donโ€™t have a well formed opinion.

Immigrant here: Tech is a global game where winner takes all. Rarely one needs a local company building a compiler, VR headset, or productivity software; cheaper to import. Local engineers find it hard to compete or grow; however, 2020s remote work transition might change this.

I try to give back by: staying connected, recruiting, inspire, mentoring. However, this wonโ€™t move the needle. Itโ€™s not even a tech problem since there are more pressing local issues to fix first. Would help if all nations understand we live in a global world and act like such.
