I’m using the superwides from the office, and I have issues connecting my MacBook to it. For some reason external monitors cause it to to overheat.

Yes but never that wide. A window manager (I use Better Touch Tool) becomes important.

My husband used a 40 inch but said they were too narrow in the height for what he used it for . He moved to a 34 inch monitor with more height.

I used to have this exact one. The resolution isn’t that great (equivalent of 1080p) but high refresh rate The primary use-case is gaming (FPS). If for design / documents, standard 4K is nicer on the eyes. If you really need width, get 32-36” superwide w/ high res & refresh rate
-
Second this: the resolution is disappointing, esp if you’re doing design/pixel things... you’re better off with 2x27inch 4K for the same price

Yes. a 49 ultra wide monitor is the best setup I ever used

Went from 3 screens to one ultra wide, now scaling down to just a good primary regular sized one. Found it too distracting for deep work.
-
Distracting in what way? Was the ultra wide more distracting than having multiple?

switching to an ultrawide monitor was 100% one of the best things I ever did for my productivity - especially for creative tools. just make sure you get one with a high enough resolution and avoid ones with too much curvature!

Which do you have + are you happy with it?
