One of the saddest things I hear on pretty much a weekly basis is "ah yes, I left the video game industry and now I'm paid better, have more stability, and am happier and more satisfied with my life"

It does. I friend of mine, quietly left the game journalism and he's just generally a happier guy. For whatever reason, games has attracted really toxic people and it's made the rest of us really miserable.
