GPT-4 almost beat me at chess today (specifying moves via algebraic notation). None of the previous text-completion AIs, including ChatGPT, could play chess at all, so this is a gigantic leap. It could also discuss the game, rewind moves, etc.

Am I wrong in assuming this is the first time in history a non-learning system that wasn't specifically designed to play chess (no explicit game-tree search algorithms) could play the game well?

It apparently knows how to play chess well simply from studying the probability patterns in past human discussions of chess.

Can you post some screenshots of your prompts? I'm seeing a lot of variation in how good people say it is (at chess)
try asking it to treat the game as if it were a battle in the civil war and describe each move as an action by a unit or specific person. It works. It's kinda cool. I don't care that it can't play the game. Then ask it to treat each piece like a specific ninja move from naruto
