    where saying something online can be deemed "illegal" & lead to IRL detainment/punishment. The rules might be set to restrict certain content, but b/c of the fear of stepping close to that line, you purposely shy even farther away & suppress even technically permissible speech.

    The seemingly arbitrary nature of the algorithm's results & timing, often lack of any human judgment and moderation in the process, and the severe penalties if ruled against also remind me a lot about the culture of self-censorship on platforms in more "repressive" countries...

    but the 2nd order effects of creators adjusting to those rules (even if they've never experienced it firsthand! it's enough that people talk about it) and subsequently creating/not creating certain kinds of content is often as large if not larger...

    Thorough white paper on Content ID & the chilling effects it's had on content creators/fair use commentators. Not surprising for those who have experienced it, but reminder about how it's not just algorithms themselves that change what content is consumed/promoted…
