I was ambivalent about Buttigieg but HFS this pisses me off. NYC lived through 9/11, which was used to justify sending the whole country to war. But we aren't the "heartland" aka "Real America". This is some Sarah Palin level bullshit. "Shape" a better "vision" than that.

Happy birthday to Gene Hackman. The Royal Tenenbaums is one of those movies I will watch whenever it comes on because it just works so well for reasons I can't even try to explain. It should suck, but it doesn't, and I can never figure out why. But Hackman is part of the answer.

Any other ideas for expensive rectangles I can add for comparison?

In Brooklyn, it's $718 per sqft, which still fits a layer of base model iPads. In Queens, it's $528, so you could do $50 bills. In Staten Island, it's $379, which you could cover with Samsung 82" 8K TVs. In the Bronx, it's $305, so you'd use the slightly smaller 75" 8K TVs.

Zooming out, the median Manhattan listing price per sqft is $1,372. So at the median you could use $100 bills or iPads in the Mini, Air, or base model style.

If you're thinking smaller, recently a 350 sqft SoHo penthouse apartment was listed at $645,000. You could get away with MacBook Airs at that price.

PH80 at Columbus Circle is currently asking $75M for 8,500 sqft. At that price you could cover that floor with iPhone 11 Pro Maxes, but not quite with $1000 bills. You could also do five layers of Mac Pro Display XDRs.

The Woolworth Building's 9,600 sqft penthouse originally listed for $110M. Since it's relatively small, that's up to $1000 bill flooring. However now it's going to list for $79M, which is still pretty high, needing iPhone 11 Pros to cover the space.

Going the other direction is 114 Charles St in the West Village. Two years ago this 13,500 sqft listed for $49.5M. That's another 16" MacBook Pro listing. However they've done some work and relisted at $80M, pushing this up with the other iPhone XR properties.

Consider 12 East 69th St, which originally listed at $114M. At 20,000 sqft that's also asking iPhone XR prices. Apparently that's too much, so the price was reduced recently to $79M, which drops it into 16" MacBook Pro territory. Or five layers of base model iPads.

The penthouse at the Atelier in Midtown is more reasonable, just $85M for 15,000 sqft. Ignoring the incentives that come with it like two tickets to space (!!), that's like having a floor tiled with iPhone XRs. Or you could buy 17 layers of 82" 8K TVs.

The most expensive home sale to date in the US was $238M for a penthouse at 220 Central Park South. At 24,000 sqft, you could cover it in $1000 bills for less than that price. Or perhaps you'd rather 4 layers of iPad Airs, with 6 layers of $100 bill insulation underneath.

How expensive is NYC real estate? I made this to get some perspective: Let's say a 1,500 sqft place lists for $2M. For that price you could cover the floor with iPad Airs and have money left over. Some real examples:

I have very mixed feelings about this. I loved this series and want more but the end really stands on its own.

TIL in 1953 Raymond Chandler made fun of sci fi by writing a paragraph full of technobabblegibberish and a character named Google.

But of course Jack is a charming, skinny white guy so he survives and scrambles to roll back his changes. Somehow he is redeemed by just helping undo the dumb things that nobody asked him to do in the first place. 11/13
