It has always been a major part of the Trump campaign to funnel money towards people who advance the Trump side in the culture war, while disavowing Trump. This makes the Trump campaign seem reasonable.

While I deplore the excesses of some of my fellow leftists, I'm guessing there is a lot of money juicing the intense hysteria about those incidents. And no attention to the attacks on academics that have been happening since 2000 on issues like Israel/Palestine.

David Horowitz built an industry around policing speech on campus, engineering the termination of faculty members, especially those who taught about Palestinian aspect. Their “free speech” “movement” is just another way of policing campus speech.

"Cancel culture" is just culture. There has always been contention over who deserves to be admired and whose legacy is worthy of celebration. Culture isn't just an endless process of accretion, there's always pruning.
