Hey #AcademicTwitter - what's your most intense professional cringe moment?
Mine: I was a visiting speaker at Fancy U. Dinner plans had gotten as far as making a reservation and telling me, but apparently no farther. I ended up sitting by myself at a table for 8 for 2 hours.
Receiving a text from a friend, when I was making my kids breakfast in New Haven, "hey, lots of anticipation for your keynote - everyone is already seated. Need directions to the auditorium?"

When I was contract teaching, the college forgot to tell me the semester started before Labour Day for the first time ever. I got a phone call at home from the office asking where I was after my students told them no one had shown up to teach. :(

I don't remember, I blotted it out. After I got my kids to school, I smoked half a pack of cigarettes in 30 minutes though.

A colleague of mine turned up to hear a talk only to realise with horror he was expected to be the keynote as he was guided onto the stage - he had nothing prepared. To give him full credit he managed to give a talk!!!!

A Head did that to me once. I turned up for a meeting (at 6.30 am!) with him and he sat me in front of 20 of his SLT and told them I was going to brief them for an hour and he promptly walked out. Needless to say, I briefed them for an hour. Faultlessly.

mine is close: sitting home working on my symposium paper and feeling good that it will be done before I get on the plane. A friend calls from destination: “are you OK? people at the airport having been trying to find you”
