I’m stunned at the level of arrogance by people with zero scholarly accomplishments directed against the 1619 project. It’s not the content of the critique per so - it’s the smug self-assurance that basic scholarly orthodoxy in US history is a conspiracy by Black people. My god.

I am speaking rather about non-academics who seem to assume that 5 mostly emeritus US historians are voicing the status quo view of the role of race in US history, and writing as if it is some kind of conspiracy theory to cover it up.
-
The fact is that the essays in the 1619 project are by scholars with impeccable credentials. We can fight about a pure Marxist line vs. a racial capitalist line, but this is a legitimate terrain to disagree with. There is no conspiracy theory.

Jason - when you win a few Pulitzers like the historians you’re critiquing maybe we’ll take your complaints seriously.

This is embarrassing for you. They were neither histrionic nor just some old historians. They’re leaders in their field.

“Older historians with minority view” sounds like age discrimination.

If you want histrionic, check out Hannah-Jones’ response to the critiques. “Basic scholarly orthodoxy” is always going to reflect the political pressures of its time and place. Why should the 1619 authors (most of whom are not historians) be any different?

Listen to yourself quickly pivot from dismissing eminent historians in this tweet to saying this: “But the smug arrogance with which the extremely reputable scholars who contributed are being treated [...]” a little self-awareness, please.

"Controversial", you mean they point out historical inaccuracies?
