If your company requires you to work nights and weekends, they’d require you to work even more if there was more time! It’s not that nights and weekends are the exact amount of extra time required, it’s that that’s all the extra time there is. They’d take more if they could.

(To be extra clear since some have made them point, I’m talking about nights and weekends *in addition to* a standard day’s work. Not talking about people who work night or weekend shifts as their only shifts).

I agree with this in the vast majority of cases but I definitely think there's an industry specific aspect to this that matters. For example, in ours, logistics, We have no control over customer hours or truck breakdowns etc. Granted, I know a tweet only gives you so much room.

I did all night era in all my 20’s. made no difference. It ruined my health. The founders got rich. I got jack squat. I now don't work beyond 5pm. Focused 6-8 hrs a day. No more. Achieve more now than I did previously. Also, my health has improved alot.

Glad you got your life back.

Requiring night or weekend work, when it's not a normal part of your work shows a structural problem with leadership, even in limited scenarios like before a launch or busy season. They can choose to limit scope, or add resources but choose to overwork employees instead.pic.twitter.com/h4wPQIciG9

Exactly. Limiting scope is the most powerful, proper, and useful option, but asking people to work more is the easiest option (for management).

I don't fully agree to this notion. In the early days of any startup, if you have demand to fulfill then you gotta punch above the weight in order to remain relevant.

40h is plenty of time to do what needs to be done. If you’re going to work extra on anything I’d suggest working in figuring out what doesn’t need to be done, not what else needs to be done.
