        @jasondavies but ... Antarctica is not a country.

        @scotartt Good point! I should probably remove it from the ranking numbers, but it seems nice to keep the land mass showing for comparison.

        @jasondavies maybe a relative continent size one that adjusts for mercator projection distortion? Alaska ain't that big.

        @scotartt I’m not using Mercator. Alaska really is that big: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alaska_area_compared_to_conterminous_US.svg …

        @jasondavies Awesome! The one but last country, between trinidad and luxembourg doesn't seem to have a name. Do you know which one is it?

        @philogb Ah, well spotted. That’s Northern Cyprus, which doesn’t have a designated ISO 3166 code (I guess it’s disputed territory).

        @jasondavies @philogb it was disputed until 3 days ago

        @moebio @philogb I’ve given it an ISO 3166 code of -1.

      @trent_hauck Area of Alaska: 1,717,854 km²; remainder of US: 7,429,566 km², which puts you in 8th position, just behind Australia. :)

        @jasondavies I always thought it was RU, CA, US, CN, BR, AU. Is it different because of the projection you use?

        @jhein I’m using official sources that exclude inland water bodies. I should add an option to include them.

        @jasondavies This looks really really great! My first thought was: “I wonder if he did a dive down like the coffee chart” for sub-regions
