I really like coding. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mindbogglingly much I like coding. I also like references of the meta kind. he/him

In the 1970s the cost - and size - of calculators tumbled. Business tools became toys; as a result prestige tech companies had to rapidly diversify into other products - or die! This is the story of the 1970s great calculator race...

THREAD: In light of so many folks moving to Mastodon/the Fediverse, i want to re-up a couple of threads i did last year about safety and other issues. None of these have gone away, and the increased volume is gonna make them worse, not better.

Short thread on off-grid solar systems. I grew up with solar/battery/diesel system. My parents' built a house in the 80s only 1km from the end of the grid. But it was 1 km of steep, bushy terrain, so the quote to get the powerline extended was $50,000

The great thing is that everyone can see everyone else's comments. Trouble spots are sticking out like sore thumbs, so will be pretty hard for council to ignore. We all want a city that's safe and pleasant to walk and bike around so have a go:

You know what's an interesting fact I don't think I'll ever manage to internalize? Tetanus has nothing to do with rust.

I cannot get over this. This is a time-lapse of nearly 20 yrs of footage (that I had to turn to gif) from the NACO instrument on the ESO's VLT in Chile, that shows stars orbiting a supermassive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. General relativity in action.

Vehicles, not pedestrians, still dominate crosswalks in cities. is changing that with "Green Man Authority." Lights will stay green continuously for pedestrians (until enough cars are detected to warrant a red).

If you think this can’t happen let me remind you of the Cairns couple in 2010 who were charged with procuring an abortion. 2010!!!!

So here's my favourite little quirky thing in New York, which to me is a perfect embodiment of New York's attitude, and a direct result of New York's street grid, arguably two of the city's most famous aspects…
