(1/n) Excited to share Handyfuge-LAMP; a low-cost & electricity-free centrifugation for isothermal SARS-CoV-2 detection in saliva. With COVID19 cases increasing globally, diagnostics needs to be accessible to everyone - including resource limited regions

w/ , we wrote a forum commentary unpacking key take-home messages for researchers that seek to both advance scientific discovery & explore alternative models of governance that engage, respect, & honor the civil rights of volunteers. /end

So, back to this PDF. We are fortunate that legal scholars, Barbara Evans and Susan Wolf, devoted an entire legal review to assess its legal standing. TLDR; questionable, at best. But, that hasn't stopped the chilling effect it has had on researchers. 6/n

Volunteers may also lead their own research. People like (RIP ) Hugh Reinhoff Jr. () & others, have shown many possibilities for direct action in advancing discovery. 5/n

Or research volunteers might aggregate their personal research data and donate it to causes or orgs they care about. Rare diseases and understudied health conditions lose valuable time & capacity to discover by having their longitudinal data sitting in disparate silos. 4/n

Or to ensure their privacy through the inspection of data being held about them by others, potentially aided by a trusted third party. Imagine if you didn't have access to your own financial records, and the IRS assigned you an accountant for filing your taxes. 3/n

There are many good reasons why research volunteers may want access to data generated about them through their participation in studies and trials, including a desire to be more informed about nature of research they are involved in 2/n

It's long past time to get rid of policies that block researchers' efforts to engage, respect, & honor the civil rights of research volunteers. A rather egregious example is a PDF that appeared on website in '14 & I explain 1/n

The Lyme rash (erythema migrans) on skin of color is difficult to find in dermatological references and I'm asked often to provide some, so I was delighted to receive this (I'm assured the young man pictured made a full recovery).

🚨I wrote about COVID-19 long-haulers—the thousands of people who’ve been struggling with *months* of debilitating symptoms. Many have faced disbelief from friends and medical professionals because they don’t fit the typical profile of the disease. 1/

Even as a virologist, there’s one insidious type of bacteria that weighs on my mind. Borrelia- carried by ticks, causes Lyme disease. Thank you for recognizing that we do after all need a vaccine (GSK pulled theirs due to unsubstantiated fears).

I’m a virologist, biotech investor (vaccines, drugs, & diagnostics). For ease, here are all my explainers in one place (why is SARS2 worse than SARS1? What are antibodies? Is vaccine possible?), full of analogies even kids will understand. Will help you know what’s true.

The NIH is looking for healthy volunteers to test the prevalence of COVID in asymptomatic Americans. They will ship you an at-home blood test that you mail back, and will return your results to you.
