I'm already wondering if reading the digital version on Jan 9 (when it's released) is worth waiting or if I should try to buy a dead-tree version today.

Amazon is actually releasing it via kindle at 9am today. They moved it up.
Part of the reason apparently is that went ballistic over this book and Wolff / the publisher decided to release it even earlier as a hearty "fuck you" to Trump.
Oh good, it's also $6 cheaper than the hardcover.
