When you write a program that takes 14 hours to do a complex computation on 10+ terabytes of data and 14 hours later it informs you that you made a small syntax error and never get your results.

Yeah man -- +1 for compiled languages where you get your warnings before you run it. :)

A friend did this except it was multiple days of running `./program > output` and then when he went to analyze the result accidentally ran `./program > output` again 😭

I also had a long running machine learning experiment which we needed results for an upcoming paper deadline and there was some issue related to trying to coax PIDs out of a screen session as file handles were broken or some madness. I can't remember as I was sleep deprived lol.

Yep :( I force myself to use compiled languages for high-stakes projects now I don't have that problem.
