Fascinating - I had this exact discussion with a friend of mine recently. The original Toy Story was generated using a render farm with more than 100 Sun workstations. I've read for Jurassic Park it took 10 hours to render a single frame on Silicon Graphics systems in 1993.

Apparently I heard from one of the co-producers from the movie "Toy Story" that computers today could render the original movie faster than you could watch it. That's pretty amazing considering it originally took them like 40-60 hours just to render a couple frames back in 90s
