So uhhh...did the Rex Sox and White Sox get their name in the same way? Does it go back to their original uniforms or something? Or am I missing something more obvious?

Pretty much. Referred to their stockings and papers all kinda agreed to abbreviate them as "sox." One of the major league precursors had the St. Louis Brown Stockings and the American Association had the Toledo Blue Stockings for a year.

19th century baseball was really janky. Like the Wilmington Quicksteps folded during warmups because attendance for a game was 0 and the owner couldn't make the gate fee. So some of the players on the team simply joined the other team scheduled to play.
