It amazes me that the standard Ubuntu install still reserves 5% of the main disk for root. A 2TB SSD has around 100 gigabytes reserved.
tune2fs -m .1 /dev/sda is like getting free extra space. 5% made sense back when HDs were a few gigabytes but now?

Good question. I think I'll write the Ubuntu maintainers and ask them what reasoning they are using to still reserve 5%.
If 16.04 can run on an 8gb eMMC, you'd think 400MB should be enough for everyone.
