It's a generic Sony IMX-179 based USB cam (lsusb doesn't return a manufacturer).

What program are you using to interface with the device and are you using the standard drivers or company specific (although usually most products don't have linux specific drivers)

Ahhh you answered the driver question :) -- I'm looking into it to see what I can find.

And program is currently fswebcam but am not tied to it. I may want to cut my teeth on py at some point but right now single frame grabs with a bash script

You're going for 8MP -- what's the highest resolution you've been able to achieve thus far?

By the file size, an order of magnitude less so I'm assuming 344x224 or so (130k files). I figure it's not worth the hassle if moving the card to the pc at this point

Nope, sorry the image size is technically correct but the compression is atrocious and image unusable.

Have you tried RAW mode or is that even an option with that program? I usually never have much success with compression in that environment

it's not available with this program at least, but png is also giving me fits - "unable to handle format" but I'm not sure why.
v4l2-ctl lists mjpeg and yuyv as options for the camera

If you don't have any immediate ideas, it's cool, I still appreciate the questions cuz they make me think. I've plenty of time to solve this, & am tiling the bathroom for the next few days. There's also a random reset problem which I'm not sure if system stability or power.
