In addition to this, deletes are SLOW. Often an application will mark a database row for deletion, and that causes it to no longer show in the app. A periodic process will run at off peak times to actually delete the rows marked for deletion.

One of the bits I've seen folks crowing about in this Parler hack is that deleted posts weren't really deleted, simply marked as "this is deleted" but kept in the database.
Two things:
1) data deletion is hard
2) this is (shockingly) not unreasonable
