Also late '90s/early '00s people hanging around on IRC:

*** PBot sets mode: +b *!*@*.aol.com
*** Joe was kicked by ZBot (lamer!)

IRC was great. Nearly every modern-day computer security company worth above 1 billion dollars started off with a founder in #hack (not joking)

Yeah! The early days of the internet really was a much smaller community. I remember the days of organizing a list of local BBS'es (in the Baltimore area for me) and logging in via my Supra 14.4 modem.
Good times!

BBS stuff was great...still friends with some sysops I met nearly 20 years ago by first dialing into their systems. Many nights playing "door" games like TradeWars 2002 and posting on forums

Oh man -- I loved TradeWars 2002! That game was so addicting. I remember spending hours waiting for the busy signal to go away so I could log in and start moving cargo across the galaxy.
The best part was when you logged in before midnight, used up all your turns, and then logged back in after midnight to resume with a fresh rate limit. :)
