Is anyone here old enough to remember the "Gopher" protocol (created by the University of Minnesota in 1991 by Mark P. McCahill, Farhad Anklesaria, Paul Lindner, Daniel Torrey, and Bob Alberti)?

The Gopher protocol had a more rigid document structure compared to HTML / WWW. Also, fear of licensing fees pushed people away from it and towards WWW in the early 90's.
Today there are approximately ~400 Gopher sites remaining.

yes gopher was still on the school computers in Minnesota but it was pretty much almost defunct
