I have a story related to this. I grew up in this area and I never really got a chance to see the night sky with no light pollution. When I moved out to Colorado, a friend and I drove to Phoenix, AZ. That trip meant that we would drive all the way down Colorado into New Mexico...

I remember seeing thousands of stars all across the sky. It was just breathtaking -- I had never seen anything like it. It was honestly majestic and awe-inspiring to witness. There were so many different colors...each star was so distinct and crystal clear. It was AMAZING.

Wow. I grew up in NYC too, similar experience. Still haven't seen the milky way tho. Once on a company trip we stayed in a place deep in state park territory and a bunch of us drunkenly jokes that the sky had lots of broken pixels =D
