If a guy robs your home at knifepoint and you shoot him in the back halfway across the lawn, even with the castle defense you could be charged with murder because your life was no longer in danger. Shooting someone in the back when they're running away is not self defense.

Putting aside the debate over whether the shooting was justified, on a broader level we need to ask ourselves how this situation escalated to the point it did. A man sleeping off alcohol in his car should not end up with his death. Whether there needs to be a change in policy..
