For me, this was the most significant finding of our study. Michael Brown's death and the #BlackLivesMatter narrative gave media a frame for deaths of unarmed black people at the hands of the police. Reframed as part of a larger phenomenon, these deaths started getting attention.

In our paper, we asked if reporters covered police violence toward black people as a systemic issue after Michael Brown's death. Before his death, 2% of stories mentioned more than one victim. Afterward, 21% of stories mentioned more than one victim. The frame had changed.
