I heard a take that this is what most of history is like, we just lived through a few decades of relative calm

That's true. Perspective is everything. There were periods of history where people would wake up to their neighbors getting pillages, raped and slaughtered. It's easy to sit back and say, "this time period sucks."
However, relative to what I know, this time period is a bit nuts.
