- Any live cell with < 2 live neighbours dies.
- Any live cell 2 or 3 live neighbours lives.
- Any live cell with > 3 live neighbours dies.
- Any dead cell with exactly 3 live neighbours becomes a live cell.

John Conway is why I got a PhD in computational social science. His Game of Life was my first encounter with cellular automata and I thought it was just about the coolest most interesting thing I had ever seen.
Still mostly feel that way.
