It appears the daily max's are slowly getting smaller over time.

That's a good point. As more people unfortunately succumb to Covid, more and more people will either directly know someone who has died or know someone who knew someone that passed.

Don't know how many aliases did you check, but it's getting nicknames now like roni / rona and there are also those who insist on calling it Chinese virus / flu, so tracking could be tricky.

Are you making allowance for the fact that often people don't need to use those actual terms? In many cases the message is carried by words like "at the moment", but further than that, everything anyone says or does - or doesn't do - is against a known, shared background.

We all know why we're at home, why people are scared, why people are suddenly co-watching tennis matches or old Doctor Who episodes for escape. There is no need to articulate that.
