I've heard that middling novels make the best movies because they allow filmmakers the space to do the work that cinema does best, whereas great novels just lose their shine in translation of form

Blade Runner. The book ("Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep") was lacking.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. (Book was slow.)
