What is a good example of a movie that ended up being far better than the novel it was based on?

French Lieutenant’s Woman. Both book and film good. The book seemed incompatible with cinematic media, yet the screenwriters managed to reinvent it so well.

American Psycho is the top answer when this was asked on Reddit, but I've never read the novel so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've heard that middling novels make the best movies because they allow filmmakers the space to do the work that cinema does best, whereas great novels just lose their shine in translation of form

Movie better than the book?
Blade Runner. The book ("Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep") was lacking.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. (Book was slow.)
Wag The Dog. ("American Hero" was just weird. Movie didn't follow the book.)
Horton Hears a Who!
