And we should be able to address diverse research questions, not limited to politics, journalism etc. Think of linguistic analyses for example. Data access that is close to the structure of the underlying database system would be necessary for this kind of research.

I have several API's available for Reddit data and I gather comments and posts in near real-time. We're working on expanding Telegram data. There are always ethical questions in my mind but I do honor removal requests from Reddit users. I feel that is the right thing to do.

My biggest dilemma is balancing the needs of research by maintaining an accurate (as possible) data set while also keeping the methodology as ethically / morally sound as possible. Sometimes they aren't mutually compatible in certain situations so I will often seek out advice ...

... from the data science / academic community. I've had situations in the past where a user has e-mailed me in a panic saying that her family would murder her if they found her content online so I acted quickly in that situation. It's a very tough process and a fine line to walk
