Just discussed with a communication science PhD student whether there are any established methodologies or best practices for text analysis. It seems kind of like each researcher is trying out their favorite tools and methods. #commSci #textAnalysis Prove me wrong?

"Text analysis" / NLP is a very broad term that can encompass a number of different methodologies ranging from entity extraction, sentiment analysis, etc.
There are a lot of great tools out there -- personally I like using Stanford's NLTK package.

Thanks! I know lots of such tools, work in NLP and give workshops on such tools for social scientists regularly.
My question was one of methodology: when (= for which research question) should you use which one?
Status quo is like you said: each person has their own favorite.

As a side note, I find NLTK problematic for real uses, I only use it for teaching.
