. I have never seen a retweet count go down. I'm also seeing what I believe are accounts that retweet and then immediately delete the retweet to boost retweet numbers.
Is this a thing?

A practice known as "tweetdecking"

The first tweetdecking network we looked at used custom automation tools to post retweets on all accounts simultaneously and delete the retweets a few minutes later. Does the new set do likewise?

I haven't looked at it myself, but according to what I read, the counts are synchronized over time. They should go down again eventually.
I wonder if one could create some kind of statistical proof. If difference to Retweets found via API is bigger than x%, probably faking.
