My guess (and I still think them asking is stupid) is that this might be to cover situations where someone logged into their account on a public (library computer) and then didn't log off and someone else comes up and engages chat.

Yeah -- but that's the only thing I could come up with. Other than that, I've got nothing.
What I *really* hate is when I call into banks or insurance companies and dial in my account number, get transferred and then they ask for my account number.
