Yes but academics were complicit. Very much so. I’d certainly agree that all academia shouldn’t be punished for what some assisted in but I believe there has been a real problem of the lack of academics lack of independence from military contractors

... better understanding of the issues that social media has brought along with it and how easily it is for anyone to quickly become a social media influencer overnight since the bar to entry for acting as a "reputable" media outlet is basically the cost of an internet connection
There's still probably a lot of unknowns but companies such as Facebook have consistently thwarted researchers attempts to get data for open transparency while there are back-channel deals being made to harvest the data for monetary gain.
Society in the end suffers from this.
