Why do I feel like the entire planet is going to hell in a hand basket? I can't tell if world politics are a lot worse compared to the 80's / 90's or if I'm just paying more attention to politics as I get older.

It is a whole lot worse because back then there was a social structure and procedures that most people trusted and went by. Today institutions have been vilified and degraded so much that this is the result.
