How far back in time could I take a modern laptop and smartphone before I had to worry about getting shot, stabbed, burned, etc. for being a witch?

Yeah I think 18'th century is when it would be too foreign. Maybe Ben Franklin would understand some basic concepts "You know that shock you got when flying that kite -- we made this from that."

Yea this definitely made me think. I think they need to have at least a basic understanding of the concept of technology and you might be able to believably explain that it's that and not magic.
