Can someone explain to a layman what I am seeing here, how/why it happened, what damage it did (if any) and how often this happens?

Cosmic rays regularly graze the camera sensor during an exposure- we probably see a few per day. No harm done. You can tell it's not a 'real' thing on Mars as it's in one eye of a stereo pair, but not the other ( and they're taken at the same time )

I'm assuming this happens a lot more frequently on Mars compared to Earth due to the much weaker magnetosphere and thinner atmosphere?
