It's time to undust the reply accounts. From the time when Twitter showed every reply to all of your followers.

Twitter, PLEASE make it possible for me to occasionally reply to a stranger’s tweet without algorithmically pushing the entire conversation to my unsuspecting followers’ feeds. Not every little comment needs that kind of audience. @Twitter @TwitterSupport

Back then there was no threading. You couldn't tap on a reply and see the whole conversation. Search didn't work well, so you had to be there to see it unfold. In recent years, Twitter removed the ability to change how the original account is mentioned.

Today you can only remove additionally mentioned accounts. The original account will always be at the front of the Tweet. But we don't see the in the interface anymore. Thanks to threading.

The original account, who created the Tweet one replies to, is always at the beginning of the Tweet. Other accounts that were mentioned follow, but can be removed. But you can't put a dot in front of them. At least the aren't counted against the character limit anymore.
