Thanks! I keep heap at 30gb to avoid what you mention. I think most of the RAM is being used by ZFS cache. Since this is linux, the ZFS memory doesn't look like cache (yellow) but is green which is a PITA because I never really know how much ram I have left.

Shit, good point about it holding memory from Lucene -- I didn't even think about that. You can cap it actually. In Ubuntu, there is a config section somewhere. I need to cap that. Thanks! Great idea.
