Why liquid argon over liquid nitrogen? They seem to have a fairly close boiling point. Is it cheaper?

Hi Jason! Nitrogen is actually cheaper than argon... but argon is better in many other ways! It scintillates and produces electrons when charged particles traverse it. In this way we can 3D reconstruct particles’ tracks in the detector.
