Twitter screen names aren't immutable -- they can be changed over time. Does anyone know if an old tweet references a screen name and that screen name changes ownership, does the reference to the screen name change within the old tweet?

Not that I have seen. This account started life with a different account name, which is why my creation date is way before my first tweet. If you search the old account, you’ll find the old tweets still under the old name. Same user ID.

Feel free to use my account as a test bed for it if you’d like.

I'd be willing to do it for science but I'm not sure how many times you can change it and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to change back.

Tweets that @ mentioned your previously get redirected, but future tweets that @ mention the old name don't

if you have the old handle and not the user id, it's such a circuitous process to get at the new user handle :/ I had to use the wayback machine. Quite annoying but might be worth looking into for you.

Afaik, if the screenname is referenced in the actual tweet text, the tweet text will remain, but he internal default hyper link will be removed. If it was a reply (as example) the link should stay intact, because it is linked to a statusid/userid?

Reply chains don't appear to be affected from a name change. This all came about because I was looking at old tweets from my own account and I was pinging people that I now don't recognize under the screen name.
