IoT is absolutely horrifying and should be avoided wherever possible. Largest botnet in history was mainly comprised of compromised TVs, toasters and fridges.

I'm hearing reports of people being locked out of their homes and not being able to use their thermostats because of the Google outage. If your product doesn't have a fallback for when the internet goes down, that is poor engineering. IoT should compliment existing functionality.
