Every class has to include something that's impossible to understand. In Databases, it's B+ trees (insert/delete) and extendible hashing. Practically impossible to explain.

Dude, I deal with databases every day and I still grapple with a lot of concepts. I will say this though -- I've learned tons more through trial by fire than any book or classroom. DB theory gets DEEP but I mainly just focus on those sweet sweet random IOPs.
